Quad X Method

Systematically strengthening a horse in the right way to condition them for ridden work.

The Quad X Method is a brand new initiative drawing on the most up-to-date advances in knowledge of Equine Science and Sports Science. It has been devised by animal physiotherapist Katie Lawrence, and stems from her many years of work in equine rehabilitation.

The magic of the Quad X Method is in the way traditional exercises are combined within a clear strategic framework. Rules for progression ensure the best results are reached quickly. Individually tailored exercise plans meet the specific needs of each horse. Correct movement is trained - or retrained - reducing wear in the horse’s body and reducing the chance of injury. The aim of every Quad X programme is better health and improved performance.

Why invest in a Quad X programme?

The physical demands of carrying a rider on their back mean that over time many horses develop physical deficiencies such as weakened muscles or incorrect, compensatory patterns of movement. These can start as subtle changes that are difficult to spot, but can accumulate and lead to significant problems later.

With Quad X you will be working to a professional scheme of exercise to proactively improve your horse’s current level of strength and movement patterns.

Prevention is the best cure. Correct physical strengthening and training can help avoid some injuries, and keep your horse feeling happy in his / her work.

Who can benefit?

All horses can benefit from this work; here are a few examples.

  • young horses being prepared for ridden work

  • older horses needing a boost in musculoskeletal conditioning

  • horses that are in rehabilitation after an injury

  • horses moving to a new home, to boost muscle conditioning and to assist in the development of a good relationship with the new owner

  • horses being used for any type of competition, in order to improve performance and boost results

  • any other horse at all, where you are interested in safeguarding their musculoskeletal health.

What does a Quad X programme involve?

The timing of the programme, as well as the details of the exercises, will be adjusted to meet your particular circumstances. Typically, I would expect to visit around 7 times over the course of 12 weeks.

At each visit I will assess your horse’s posture and movement. I will then set schemes of exercise for you to follow in order to strengthen areas of weakness, and improve balance, coordination and habits of movement of your horse. I will ensure you are confident in using the exercises, and will email the plan to you in an easy to use pdf format that includes simple instructions, photos and video clips.

Each subsequent visit will involve re-assessment and development of the next stage of the exercise plan.

After that, the progress you make is down to how consistently you follow the plan!
